#135 Sample Essay

My previous lives end with tragedy. Each time I find a new master, bad things happen.
Now, I am in my graveyard. The world is no more my home. I need to search for another place for myself… A place for me to rest in peace.

My last memories were about my new master, Jack. He found me, and brought me home. He fed me and stroked me gently. I like him the most, I swear I do.
Jack has siblings. They are Christina and Nick. They adore me too. Although they already had a pet dog, they adopted me too. At first I thought this would be my home, but unfortunately it is now my grave.

The rain stopped and it was night now. Everything was quiet and peaceful except for my enemy—Kopi, their pet dog. I hate it. I hate it barking at me and I hate its fierce look.
Jack’s mother did not agree with Jack to keep me. Therefore, they decided to let me go. No, I would not go. This is my home, I am going to stay here and nothing could stop me!

The gentle hands put me on the icy floor. I shiverd. It was very cold and I missed the cozy feel in Jack’s house. “Please, do not leave me” I whimpered. When Jack turned his back and walk away, I prowled behind him to get back into his house.
I could not get into his house when I came near the gate. Kopi was guarding it. I hissed and yeowled at him. It seemd to work. Still, I fear that it would tear me into pieces.

Finally, it was my chance. Jack’s parents were home. I scampered toward the car and hid under it. Kopi was furious and desperate to catch me when he saw me succeeded to get in. I purred contentedly but my stomach was rumbling. I was hungry. Was there anything to eat?

Unfortunately, there was no food for me. Then I remembered that Jack had put food for me near the Kampung house where he left me. Now, I had only two choices left: To starve or to surrender.

I curled up and tried to sleep in this cold and hungry situation. After hours of nightmare, my eyes caught a glimpse of dawn light. It was going to be morning. Kopi was still very energetic but its attitude was softer now. It did not bark me that loudly. Furthermore, it tried to snif me and befriend me.

Though, cats do not get along with dogs. Jack went to school followed by his parents going to work. Kopi was taken outside and now I was left inside the gate. This was my victory.
Although I was inside the house now but I could not find any food. This would be my doom. Suddenly, Nick came home. He did not aware that I was in the house, so he let Kopi in. Oh no, Kopi must get me this time! I had to do something.

“Meow!” I leapt on Kopi and hissed at him. I felt a sudden pain in my stomach and blacked out.
I never woke up since then. My life ended again in tragedy. Why am I always unfortunate, dying at a young age? Why am I borned to be a cat, an animal? How many times do I need to repeat this kind of life? Why…Why?

#134 Pride Justice

A peacock's pride
Shown by its tail
How gorgeous it was
How marvellous it feels

But thy pride won't
Last long as live
As pride comes from goal
Where's pride without goal

As fair as it
Justice not justice
When evil rules
Over it

Who has the power
Who has the "Justice"
This justice now
No longer is

A man has pride
A man has justice
Be good, Be bad
Keeps it with him

#133 On The Way Back Home

For once
I lost my way back home
In front of me
An endless road

Until the day
They come to me
The two big hands
I wait and weep

Before I knew
They stay with me
Take care of me
And look after me

Though they fought
They dear me too
Seldom heard
They scream at me

Thus I'm relieved
I have them both
Though I prepared
To lose them both

Life's a dream
A short history
To us it seem
A century

Never feel
Reality
Until the day
I went back home

#132 Sample Essay

Yesterday, dad, mum and I decided to visit Teluk Intan, which is near my father's childhood home, Bagan Datoh. A sunny day it was and we started off leaving my brothers painting the wall.

This is the first time for mum and I visiting Teluk Intan. My first thought of Teluk Intan was "Wow, what a big town!" when I saw many buildings with the name "Teluk Intan". But, when I really came into the town, it was just a big square. The Leaning Tower ate up a lot of space at the centre of the town! Although the sun is high in the sky as my handphone shows noon, we scurried out from dad's car and took few memorable photos with the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan.

When I was young, I knew Teluk Intan as Anson. Anson means "harmony and peace" in Chinese. Today, I really feel that Teluk Intan is a peaceful town and a historical one. There are still ancient buildings opened for business and the Leaning Tower has a tip of Chinese Design: Green roof and conical shaped body.

We visited my dad's cousin sister who owns a nursery and motel in Teluk Intan. Her 3 daughters are grown ups, around 20+ ladies. As aunt always keep in touch with our relatives, she is "The Guide Of The Day".

After lunch, we set off to visit other relatives. Unfortunately, Dads car is as hot as an oven. The aircon is not functioning. Aunt introduced us to a workshop nearby and we waited the car to be serviced for few hours. We chatted a lot and heard many of my Aunt's story when she was young.

Hours passed by. Finally, the car was serviced. But not long after our journey, hot air came out from the aircon again. Haiz, we had to roll down the windows and take some fresh air.

First, we went to Selekoh, my dads old home. There is a big coconut drying spot, which in the olden days is a popular place trading dried coconuts. We met dad's aunt and uncle, my aunt's parents. We saw a piece of land where it used to have rows of houses 6 years ago before the fire which took away my cousins' life as I know from my aunt. It was a tragedy to my uncle.

Later, we visited dad's another aunt. They have a small, black kitten. It jumped on my lap! It is so cute! We chatted for a while and left there to Bagan Datoh. Before leaving, they gave us a tin of "Kuih Kapit"(Chinese Biscuit, triangular shaped, crispy, golden brown). My favourite!

Bagan Datoh is a place that have little people. There are no ships or boats at the harbour when we reached there. The air didn't taste salty and is refreshing. We took some photos together at the harbour.
Although the harbour is made of concrete cements, we felt that the harbour is shaking slightly when we looked down the sea. I thought I saw a white, long fish(shark) when I looked down. I almost turn pale but mum says it might not be a shark. Some kind of other fish, maybe.

Then, we went to Ban Gang. It is totally different from Bagan Datoh. Fishermen are all sitting around, chatting. Sampan, boats and ships are parked by the shore. I took some photos with boats and ships. Then, we found a place where fishes came in everyday. There is also a big, cold storage at the harbour.

Thunder was rolling and it was raining cats and dogs. We hurried back to aunt's house and took bath. Aunt took a Japanese Costume and put it on me. That was the first time I weared a Japanese "He Fu". Later when the rain stops, we have our dinner at a restaurant nearby. After dinner, we went to a house and bought "Chee Cheong Fun" there. After departing with aunt and her family, we went home.

From yesterdays journey, I found that many schools have a large and big compound. It is weird. For me, I feel that "big city, small school""small city, big school".Funny, isn't it? I hope that government don't put all attention on Malay schools. Although Chinese schools are mainly Chinese students, there are still students of other races studying in Chinese schools. If government wants us to unite, I have a plan. Don't say Malay school, Chinese school or Indian school. Just a school, no matter students of what race talking what language. Its okay, isn't it?

#131 Safety Tips When Going To School

Every year, hundreds of children are injured and sometimes killed in an accidents . This is because, ther are neglecting the rules and regulation of roads safety. However, there are many ways to prevent from the increasing of road accidents that effectuate students.

For those who walks to school alone, needs to be compained by the elderly. Besides, they can also walk in pairs or groups if thath makes them feel more safe. Don't ever use shortcuts especially through a dark and quite place such as the back alleys. This place is dangerous for girls to pass through it.

Next, you have to be aware with your surroundings. Watch out for any suspicious person. When you smell anything fishy, immediately inform it to the security guard or straight foward to the principal. This action, sometimes can scare them away from you.

Dicipline is very important. When you are well diciplined, you will never break any rules for every place that you'll go. For an example, students who attends to school by bus. Always queue up before ascending the bus. Patience is needed, because this will prevent them from pushing other bus users whether they are boarding or alighting the bus. #130 The Work of A Pilot

A pilot flies a plane. He holds a very responsible job as many lives depend on his skills of piloting the plane.
A pilot must have the necessary qualifications before he is selected to be a pilot.he has to undergo many hours of training before he can qualify to undertake the job.

A pilot must be disciplined and serious with the task that is given to him.He needs to practise flying the plane to ensure that he can handle any emergency situation. He should be able to think fast and put the interests of others before himself. He must have a selfless quality in him.His duty is to ensure that the plane arrives and touches the ground safety under all circumstances. He must also make certain that the lives of the people in the plane are not endangered by his actions.

Nowadays,a lot of planes are flown and controlled by computers. However, the importance of having a pilot in the plane cannot be set aside.Under certain circumstances, the pilot may have to replace the computers especially when the computers fail to function properly. The human touch and intelligence of a pilot to handle an emergency cannot be denied.

The work of a pilot involves integrity, quick thinking and duty before self.It is a job which is demanding but rewarding.

#129 The Advantages and Disadvantages of Playing Computer Games

Since early nineties, the computer has become very popular, with nearly every household starting to own one.Today, the computer has become a necessity to help in business, studies and so on.

Computer games are one of the main reasons why young children and teenagers alike are attracted to the computer. With modern technology available, computer games can also payed on the Internet with strangers from faraway countries.

However, the disadvantages of playing computer games seem to outweigh the advantages. Some people get hooked on to playing computer games so much so thatthey tend to lose interest in other more important things like studies.Computer games are one of the main factors why students neglect their studies. In addition to that, looking at the computer screens without resting the eyes for long periods of time, will spoil our eyesight.Computer games are actually a waste of time as players do not look like they gain anything from the many hours spent by pressing the buttons on the keyboard.Another problem is that the market is flooded with new and more sophisticated games and players are never able to satisfy themselves as each victory fuels another urge for a new challenge.

The advantages that are evident in playing computer games are that you will eventually know more about the computer software and hardware as each game will have its individual problem and this will have to be solved through knowing the use of the computer software and hardware.Playing computer games will also resut in the understanding of computer jargon which would otherwise confuse the mind of a non-player.One more advantage would be that our fingers will grow accustomed to pressing buttons on the keyboard as we gradually become better in our skills at the computer games.

I believe that everything should be done moderately and so should the playing of computer games. If we know to manage our time,we will get the pleasures and benefits of playing computer games.

#128 Sample Essay

During the school holidays,my cousin and I spent two nights and three days on Pulau Hawa.It was almost noon when we arrived on the island.

Upon our arrival,we were taken by a hotel coach to the Golden Hotel. We checked into the hotel and then went to a cafe for lunch. After lunch,we took a stroll in in the area around the hotel. Then,we went swimming in the sea and later looked for crabs on the beautiful sandy beaches.Next,we went exploring in a nearby village. We saw a few fishermen mending their nets under the shade of some trees. It seemed to me that the villagers led rather quiet lives but they looked happy. Our next stop was a small forest reserve on our way back to the hotel in the evening. There we saw a lot of monkeys among the trees.

The next morning,we visited a cultural village. We enjoyed watching the dancers perform various traditional dances in beautiful costumes. We took photographs with them after the show. The campsite near an enchanting waterfall was our next stop.We swam and played at the waterfall for a while before we proceeded to the orchid farm. Our visit to the farm was very interesting as the place was filled with many species of orchids, some of them quite rare.

After our visit to the orchid farm,we had delicious seafood for lunch. Then it was back to the hotel. That night we were entertained by songs and dances performed by the hotel staff.

In the morning of the third day,we left Pulau Hawa with fond memories of its natural beauty and the fresh seafood that it offered.

#127 A Person Should Be Dressed In Clothes That Suits Him/Her

I agree with the student who thinks that a person should be dressed in clothes that suits him or her. There are many factors that need to be considered over one's choice of clothing.
Clothes are put on so that one can look presentable. They are normally chosen to suit the personality of a person. The clothes chosen should be comfortable and easy to wear.A person who follows blindly the latest fashion soon finds that the clothes may not reflect his or her personality. The clothes might also not be suitable to wear in our climate or its fashion might go against our culture or tradition.
Clothes that are thick and woollen will be too hot for our daily wear.Though the air-conditioner may help to overcome the hot weather to a certain extent,it will not be practical as not all places have air-conditioners.
The latest fashion may be too outrageous in a traditional society where too much exposure of the body is not acceptable.Certain fashions are meant for parades or celebrities and not suitable for daily wear or the ordinary person. To dress in the latest fashion is not important. The important thing is to wear clothes that suits oneself and to be yourself.

#126 The Importance of Being Punctual

Punctuality is an important quality that we should all have.In school, punctuality is emphasised. For example,we must come to school on time.We must pass up our work on time and we should start and end meetings on time.
By being punctual,we are disciplining ourselves. We learn not to be wasteful with time.We also learn to respect others.Waiting for others is frustrating especially when we have agreed to meet at a certain time.By being on time,we also earn the respect from others. We are proud not only of ourselves but others may also be proud of us.Time would be indeed well-used.
Setting a good example is one way to educate those who are younger than us.When younger students see their elders behaving in this way, they will also be motivated to do the same.
Once punctuality is practised all the time.It become a lifelong habit. This means that we will be that way even as adults. The long term benefits are many and far-reaching.The country in the end becomes more prosperous as the citizens become efficient and productive.

#125 The Advantages and Disadvantages of Watching Television

Watching television has its advantages and its disadvantages.Whether watching television has more advantages or disadvantages depends on the individual.
A person can gain a lot of knowledge by watching good television programmes.Children learn moral values from educational children's programmes and science from Infoscience programmes. They also learn history from feature films as well as documentary shows. The National Geographic provides information about our habitat and environment in a very interesting way.A person gain his knowledge in the comfort of his home.Watching scientific shows stimulates the mind.It helps a person to have a wider perspective of science and its potential that can be used to help mankind.Television news is a good source of information on happenings in the nation as well as the world.
On the other hand, watching television can have a bad effect on the viewer t.Foul language, violent and indecent acts from the shows can have a negative effect on the viewer's behaviour.Scary and horror movies sometimes stretch the imagination of the viewer too far.Watching too much television may result in a person being an introvert,anti-social or becoming an addict to television programmes.
Nothing is perfect.A person must learn to make the best out of watching television by being selective of what he watches. In this way, watching television is not only fun but informative too.

#124 Study Technique

A very good day to all the Form Three students of SMK Semai Bakti. I am very grateful to our headmaster for giving me the honour of speaking to you today. I would like to share with you some study techniques that may be useful in your preparations for the PMR exam.

One of the methods of studying that I have found very effective is group study. It is always easier to understand our lessons when we revise them with our peers. It is sometimes easier for students to seek help from their school friends rather than to approach their teachers. There is also healthy competition as group members will not want to fall behind or take part in discussions unprepared.
Going through past-year exam questions helps as you will get the feel of the questioning patterns and test your preparedness for the exam.

Finally, plan your study schedule and manage your time wisely. Draw up a checklist of things that you need to accomplish before the exam and set deadlines for yourself . Be realistic about the objectives you set for yourself and make sure they are reasonable and achievable.

I hope that I have been of some assistance to you in preparing for the exam. Please feel free to talk to me if you need futher advice or clarification. I wish you all the best in your studies and the exam. Thank you.

#123 Different Reading Strategies

There are a variety of different exams and situations that require an individual to prove his or her knowledge and each individual will most likely have to face some of these situations at some point. As a result, there is a wide range of different subjects that an individual may have to study in order to prepare for a particular exam or situation. However, just as there is a wide range of material that an individual may have to learn in order to prove his or her knowledge, there is also an assortment of different ways that each particular piece of material can be presented. In other words, the information that an individual needs to learn for a particular exam may not always be found in a textbook and, even if that information is found in a textbook, it may not always be presented in the same format from textbook to textbook. It is not only possible, but in fact likely, that an individual will have to use information from more than one type of resource, so it is important for an individual to be able to effectively use all of the resources that he or she has available.
Written materials that an individual may have to use at some point include almanacs, dictionaries, educational handouts, encyclopedias, flashcards, novels, practice exams, short stories, study guides, textbooks, thesauruses, and a variety of other similar written resources. Each of these resources can be an essential study tool, but each resource is set up differently, so an individual may need to switch the way that he or she reads the material, depending on the specific type of resource that the individual is using. In other words, an individual that is attempting to study using a novel will usually need to use a very different reading strategy than the individual would normally use if he or she were studying from a textbook.
There are a variety of different strategies that an individual can use to read a particular piece of material, but it is important for an individual to find the best strategy for the type of resource the individual is using. It is also important to note that a reading strategy is not actually the same thing as a reading style. A change in reading style primarily refers to a change in the speed at which an individual reads while a change in reading strategy refers to a change in the way that an individual studies the material.

#122 Importance of Taking Notes

There are a variety of different methods that an individual might use to study for a particular examination, interview, or other similar purpose, but one of the most common and certainly one of the most useful methods is taking notes. To many individuals, note taking often seems like nothing more than a boring, monotonous task, but an individual that is able to take notes effectively will often find that his or her knowledge of the particular subject that he or she is studying and his or her exam scores will benefit from the notes that the individual takes. This is because note taking not only helps the individual remember the material, but it also helps the individual identify key details of the material quickly without having to reread long passages or entire chapters. For example, an individual that is attempting to answer a question on a worksheet may not have to reread the entire chapter to find the answer to the question he or she is trying to answer if he or she can find the answer in his or her notes. Finding the answer in the individual's notes allows the individual to save a large amount of time that he or she would have wasted if he or she had to reread the entire chapter to find the answer. However, answering a particular question is not the only way that effective note taking can be useful to an individual that is attempting to study for an exam or interview.
In fact, there are a number of other study methods that rely heavily on effective note taking in order for those study methods to work in the way that they were intended. For example, a study group is usually not very effective if all of the members of the group know nothing about the topic that a particular chapter covers. If all of the members of the group do not know the material, the entire study group will most likely spend the entire study session allowing each individual to read the chapter individually and the study group will not actually be able to study the material as a group. As a result, it is essential for each member of the group to take effective notes prior to studying the material so that each individual knows what the chapter covers and which parts of the chapter are most important.

#121 Study Group

There are a variety of different methods that an individual might use to study for a particular exam, interview, or other similar purpose, but one of the most effective ways of studying a particular subject is to study with a study group. Study groups allow students or employees to work together with other individuals that are studying similar material so that each individual can help the other members of the group learn the specific material that the group is studying. In fact, there are a variety of different advantages to studying with a study group and each of these advantages may help an individual learn a particular topic.

First, study groups often help an individual stay motivated and focused on the topic that he or she needs to study even if that topic is difficult or uninteresting. This is because study groups allow the individual to interact and discuss the topic that he or she is studying with other people instead of just reading the material in a textbook. Most individuals, after an extended period of studying, will begin to lose interest in textbooks, novels, or even assignments that they find tedious or difficult. As a result, it can be extremely useful for an individual to have other people studying with him or her who can make sure that the individual stays focused on the task at hand.
Secondly, study groups are usually much less formal than an actual class or board meeting and most individuals usually feel more comfortable asking questions. This can be helpful as it allows the individual to find answers to questions that he or she has about the material without the individual worrying whether or not he or she is asking a foolish question.
Third, study groups allow an individual the opportunity to study the material in a variety of different ways including studying the material visually through reading the material and studying the material by hearing it out loud in a discussion.
Finally, study groups allow the individual to compare ideas and notes about topics that the individual understands, and more importantly, about topics that the individual may not understand. This is important because one individual may have noted something that another individual missed during a lecture or meeting, or an individual may understand a particular topic that another member of the group is having difficulty understanding.

#120 Importance of School

Many students dread having to go to school. Yet, what would our lives be like if our parents did not make us go to school ? I think we would all be living without a purpose or an ambition. Personally, I believe that many would decide to get jobs and earn their liveng as soon as possible. I also believe that they would come to regret that decision later on in life.

The primary purpose of going to school is to get an education. There are of course many other reasons why it is important for us to go to school. School makes us disciplined. We learn about punctuality and the important of keeping to schedules. It also trains us to value time and manage it wisely. It trains us to set goals and take the steps towards realising these goals.

School is also a place for social interaction. We mix with people of different age groups and diverse backgrounds. When we mingle with people from all walks of life, we learn about human behaviour, social etiquette and conduct as well as moral values such as courtesy, consideration and respect for others.

It is at school that we learn about competition. Through sports and examinations we test our limits and abilities. We learn about our strengths and weaknesses and our areas of interest. Through sporting events we also learn about teamwork and cooperation

School, therefore is the stage in life where the faundation of our character is built. It is here that a student is nurtured into becoming a well-rounded individual who will be a useful member of society.

#119 Healthy Living

Good morning , my teachers and school friends. I would like to express my gratitude for being given the opportunity to speak to you today. The topic that I would like to draw your attention to is all bout the ways to live a healthy life.

Asstudents, we face many challenges and have to cope with such things as lessons, exams, extra-curricular activities and social events. Many of us tend to forget about our health in our aim to accomplish as much as possible within a short span of time.

In order to stay healthy, we must eat well. Our bodies need sufficient nutrition to sustain our activities. Eating the wrong food is the main cause for the ill health. We need to have a balanced diet. We should resist the urge to indulge in fast food and carbonated drinks.

We should stay away from cigarettes and alcohol. Many youngsters experiment with these substances only to find taht they have become addicted to them. In order to avoid succumbing to peer presure, we should not hang out with those who indulge in drinking alcohol and smoking.

We must also partake in some form of exercise, such as sports, aerobics or just plain walking or jogging. We must make it a point to execise for half an hour at least three times a week. Exercise is also a good way to relieve stress.

Lastly, we must avoid unhealthy lifestyles such as late night partying. We must ensure that we get proper rest and sufficient sleep so that we can wake up energised the next day.

In short, we are responsible for own well-being. I hope that my speech has enlightened you on how to lead a healthier lifestyle. Thank you.

#118 Mastering Math

While I can't say it's ever been proven, I think most people agree that students tend to excel in subjects that naturally interest them. We automatically expect, for example, that as a child John Grisham was an avid reader, and that a young Jacques Cousteau would have been mesmerized at the site of an aquarium. But when it comes to mathematics, too many students find numbers and problem-solving more intimidating than inspiring and fail to see any relationship between homework and classroom lessons and the great inventions that surround them every day.
Fortunately, helping your child make mathematical connections to "the real world" may be a lot easier than you realize. Don't think of it as teaching mathematics; think of it as teaching about day-to-day life and let the real world be your textbook. Try the following activities to help your children get involved in exploring, developing, testing, discussing and applying the interrelated mathematical ideas they will use throughout their lives.

#117 :)

WHEN I STOPPED SEEING MY MOTHER WITH THE EYE OF A CHILD , I SAW THE WOMAN WHO HELP ME GIVE BIRTH TO MYSELF :') AND HERE WE WANT TO WISH TO ALL OF MOTHERS OUT THERE , HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY , AND TO THE CHILD , MOTHERS DESERVE THIS DAY OF THEIR OWN , TO BE QUEEN OF OF OUR HEART AND WORLD ;)

#116 Importance of Money

A great philosopher once said "Money is a barrier against all possible evils." Let's explore and expand on this thought.

Money can prevent the sufferings that come with poverty like cold and hunger. While sickness can not be totally obliterated by money, it can be considerably relieved by it. Generating wealth and Giving away money to charity can also provide us with the satisfaction of relieving others from suffering.

With money, we can obtain an advanced education that may aid us in the development of genius and extraordinary achievements. It gives us the leisure to devote a part of our time to culture and art. Money can provide a powerful diversion for all or our troubles by permitting distraction from societys anxieties that assail us.

So we must try to get a thorough understanding of all that we may possibly do, in an honorable and legitimate way, to conserve wealth. Even to those who have inherited wealth, idleness can be a certain cause of ruin. A great fortune needs genuine labor for efficient administration. Those who leave this duty to strangers may pay a penalty for their negligence. This is why a rich man, who wants to create wealth, preserve and increase his fortune, should be his own business manager.

Even artists must know the price that their work is worth. It is necessary for the artist to be a businessman in order to have the right to be a genius. History is full of example of this. The great Shakespeare labored as a theatre manager to obtain the necessary leisure to produce his dramatic masterpieces. Edison worked as a telegraph operator to pay the bills while he "moonlighted" as an inventor.

From the bottom to the top of the ladder, it is necessary to amass money in order to apply it to some great cause. Money is the means by which we may fulfill our purpose in a larger and better way.

Everyone should, in his own way, make an effort to amass some money. Some will apply money to their daily wants. Others seek to swell the fortune that they desire to leave to their children. Some only desire money so they can devote it to some noble enterprise or charity. Finally, a large number see money chiefly as a means of immediate gratification.

Whatever the reason, everyone capable of earning money should learn how to manage it properly in order to ensure that they will have enough of it to apply to the causes that they choose.

#115 Appreciate a Teacher Any Day

In Santa Cruz, the official Day of the Teacher was last Wednesday. Honestly, at my elementary school, it feels like everyday is The Day of the Teacher. OK, not every day, but not just once a year, either.
I believe this is a phenomenon unique to elementary schools and, possibly, to De Laveaga Elementary. It took some getting used to, as I had always worked with low-income students whose parents either had a multitude of small children or more than one job to support their family. Volunteering at the school was almost unheard of. But this is not the case at De Laveaga Elementary, where it's quite the opposite. Every day there are a plethora of parents working like busy bees helping make my school be the best.
Sometimes I feel like the luckiest person alive, because I love my job. Really, I love my job. I absolutely look forward to going to work Monday morning, not only because I get to be away from my twin teenagers, but because I miss my students over the weekend.

The parents at my school are almost as amazing as their children. This was so apparent this year when my very behind-the-scenes room parent organized my class parents on Teacher Appreciation Day. By 8:30 a.m., my desk was laden with flowers and precious homemade cards with messages such as, “You’re the brightest star and the best one to follow,” and “You are the best teacher ever. You are fun, happy and fair. I love you so much.”

Every month the De Laveaga Elementary Parent Teacher Club organizes an appreciation lunch for the teachers in addition to their fundraising efforts throughout the school year. With budget cuts, the parents are fundraising so teachers do not have to buy classroom materials with their own money.
Once or twice a year, the committee members arrive at the faculty meeting with a few students who walk around the room handing out grant checks to the teachers. The students are honored to be at the teachers’ meeting, the teachers are elated and the parents are proud.
Does it get any better than this? I think not!

But what about the middle school and the high school teachers? Are they appreciated? Every year I send a small appreciation to my Addison and Garrett’s 12 teachers. Almost always the teachers tell me that I’m the only parent who does this. At the middle and high school level, things are done differently: The Boosters arrange a luncheon or a breakfast to show their appreciation for the hard-working teachers.
Those “big kid teachers” do feel appreciated and loved; there’s no doubt about that. It’s just different. I know from personal experience that teenagers are mortified to be different in any way, including—God forbid—giving their teachers presents or a card. This year my 16-year-olds conveniently left their teachers’ coffee gift cards on the table. I know the way around this situation—the Harbor High Mail Room! Our family’s appreciations will arrive sometime next week when I have time to drop by and deliver them.
Recently at the Santa Cruz Eddy Awards, the emcee quoted G.B. Stern: “Unexpressed appreciation isn’t worth anything to anyone.”

Teachers, of any level, enjoy being told that their efforts are appreciated.
If your child’s teacher or teachers have made an impression on your child in any way, by all means, let the teacher know. We love to be appreciated any day .

#114 Importance of Mobile Phone

Mobile phones are efficient communication devices and make life easier. Whether locating a friend or following up with a new contact, mobile phones allow you to connect to people in any part of the world. New mobile-phone models are constantly engineerd to meet the needs of consumers and now have multifunctional tools that may be useful in everyday life.

Mobile phones' basic function, of course, is to allow you to talk to another person while you're almost anywhere. You can place and receive calls and messages by simply pressing a person's name in your contact list, eliminating the need for memorization or a separate address book. The ability of mobile phones to connect to people in other countries helps family and friends who are from far from one another stay in touch.

Mobile phones can be especially important during emergencies. When you get into a car accident or are in trouble, you can use your mobile phones to call 911. You may also use your mobile phones's camera function to take pictures, which could deter an assailant or stalker.

Mobile phones are also important because they allow you to store data. Pictures, text and audio can be stored on many mobile phones. This enable you to carry your files around wherever you go, ensuring that you are always with important documents for work or your personal life.

Aside from communicating, mobile phones are important because of their entertainment features. New mobile phones have music player capabilities that allow owners to play music and even record audio. Some phones may have the ability to play video, enabling you to watch clips or movies while on the go.

Mobile phone applications extend the functionality of mobile phones. Word and spreadsheer processors are available, and those who may need on-the-go computing may find this a great benefit of mobile phones. Standard mobile phone applications include alarm clocks, calculators and converters, all of which may help your productivity.

Our School Exhibition
Our school held a very interesting exhibition of students' art and craft work last year. It
was surprising to see the various pieces of handwork of such high standards. These
exhibits were attractive and colourful for they had been prepared and designed well by
the students with guidance from the Art teachers. The students were obviously
enthusiastic about their work; for each item was rendered carefully and lovingly without
the slightest trace ofsloppiness.
There were many sections to interest parents and friends who came to see the work of their children. The painting of nature, Malaysian scenes, flowers and fruits was of an exceptionally high standard. Other items such as puppets, dolls and articles of
embroidery were admired, too. In the geography section, there were clay models of
physical features like hills, mountains and plateaus set in a natural environment of green
landscape with riversm eander ing through the land.
Some articles like flowers made from silk were for sale and ladies readily bought these
items. Our school exhibition was appreciated by all.

A Busy Street Scene

In a large capital city like Kuala Lumpur, there are several busy streets, but the busiest of
all is Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. From early morning, traffic starts building up.
Crowds of pedestrians, shoppers and others can be seen walking along the pavements
outside the shops or trying to cross the road.
The noise of cars and taxis hooting, or of scooters, flying past is deafening. Anyone who stops by to watch the scene is amazed at the number of vehicles zooming past or crawling along when caught at the traffic lights.
The people, mainly lady shoppers with children, line the street as they await an
opportunity to cross the road. It is a bright and gay scene. The main attraction is the
variety of textile shops, departmental stores, the Selangor Emporium, carpet shops,
restaurants, jewellers or electrical goods shops, pavement stalls with small items like
costume jewellery, toys and aluminium cooking utensils and vendors attracting customers
to buy their wares.
In the hustle and bustle, one can savour the delicious aroma of Oriental delicacies
floating in the air. It comes from 'Nasi Beriyani', 'Satay',pungent curries, fried chicken
and sweet meats, tempting passers-by to stop for some refreshment.
In the afternoon, the crowds grow bigger as office workers join thethrongs of people.
Now it is also time to go home. Taxis are in great demand while shoppers queue up to get
one. Most of the taxis have already been hired and so they do not stop to pick up
passengers, much to the frustration of the shoppers.
The crowds gradually disappear as evening approaches and darkness begins to creep in but they grow steadily again as the night market starts operating. Crowds swarm around for night snacks at the various food stalls and restaurants near the theatre or to pick up some good bargains. Now Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman is a sea of lights. It is indeed the liveliest street, busy all day long and into the night, in .the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the nation's capital.

#111 Joke~ Blonde Paint Job

A blonde, wanting to earn some money, decided to hire herself out as a handyman-type and started canvassing a wealthy neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any jobs for her to do.

"Well, you can paint my porch. How much will you charge?"
The blonde said, "How about 50 dollars?" The man agreed and told her that the paint and ladders that she might need were in the garage. The man's wife, inside the house, heard the conversation and said to her husband, "Does she realize that the porch goes all the way around the house?"
The man replied, "She should. She was standing on the porch."

A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money.
"You're finished already?" he asked. "Yes," the blonde answered, "and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats. "Impressed, the man reached in his pocket for the $50. "And by the way," the blonde added, "that's not a Porch, it's a Ferrari."

#110 Nature Forever

Two inseparable friends, Sam and Jason, met with an accident on their way to Boston City. The following morning, Jason woke up blind and Sam was still unconscious. Dr. Berkeley was standing at his bedside looking at his health chart and medications with a thoughtful expression on his face. When he saw Sam awake, he beamed at him and asked." How are you feeling today Sam?"

Sam tried to put up a brave face and smiled back saying, "absolutely wonderful Doctor. I am very grateful for all that you have done for me."

Dr Berkeley was moved at Sam's deed. All that he could say was, "You are a very brave man Sam and God will make it up to you in one way or another". While he was moving on to the next patient, Sam called back at him almost pleading, "promise me you won't tell Jason anything".

"You know I won't do that. Trust me." and walked away.

"Thank you " whispered Sam. He smiled and looked up in prayer " I hope I live up to your ideas... please give me the strength to be able to go through this.. Amen"

Months later when Jason had recuperated considerably, he stopped hanging around with Sam. He felt discouraged and embarrassed to spend time with a disabled person like Sam.

Sam was lonely and disheartened ,since he didn't have any body else other than Jason to count on. Things went from bad to worse. And one day Sam died in despair. When Jason was called on his burial, he found a letter waiting for him. Dr Berkeley gave it to him with an expressionless face and said" This is for you Jason. Sam had asked me to give it to you when he was gone".

In the letter he had said: "Dear Jason, I gave you my eyes to prove that you is my dearest friend ever. Now there is nothing more that I can ask from God, than the fact that you will see the world through my eyes. You will always be my best friend........Sam".

When he had finished reading Dr. Berkeley said " I had promised Sam to keep his sacrifice he made a secret from you. But now I wish I didn't stick it because I don't think it was worthy it".

All that was left for Jason while he stood there was tears of regret and memories of Sam for the rest of his life.

Remember me even I have gone... ~ Dont drop ur tears because I will see u from the heaven :)

#109 Centipede

The Centipedes and the Millipedes are nearly all long and slender animals with many body segments and numerous legs. They were once lumped together into a single group known as the Myriapoda. This name means 'many feet' and it was a very apt one for these animals. It is still quite a useful term although it is now realised that the centipedes and millipedes are not closely related and they are now put into their own separate classes. The centipedes belong to the class Chilopoda and the millipedes belong to the class Diplopoda. There are many differences to the habits of these two groups, but the most obvious is in the arrangement of the legs: centipedes have one pair of legs on each body segment, whilst millipedes have two sets of legs on nearly every segment.

Centipedes are all relatively slender animals, several or many times longer than they are broad. The British species range from 5 mm to about 70 mm in length and their colours vary from pale yellow through to deep brown. Their bodies are always distinctly flattened. Although, like all arthropods, the centipedes are covered with a tough outer coat, they lack a waterproof layer and they are confined to moist areas where there is no danger of drying up. Many live in the soil and leaf litter, while those that hunt freely on the ground are strictly nocturnal and spend the day hiding under logs and stones where they can keep moist. Like the Woodlice, they react strongly to touch and they do not normally come to rest unless both upper and lower surfaces are in contact with the surroundings. Such behaviour ensures that the animals end up under stones or bark, where they can be sure of moisture. The centipedes have not been studied to the same extent as have the woodlice, but it is likely that the two groups react in much the same way to light and humidity.

The centipedes head is quite flat and covered with a round or oval shield. It carries a pair of prominent antennae, which are the animals major sense organs, enabling it to smell and feel it's way around. Many of the species are quite blind, but some carry a number of simple eyes on the front of their head shield. Even so, with a few notable exceptions, their eyesight is very poor. The underside of the head bears a pair of stout jaws and two pairs of accessory jaws or maxillae, which hold the food whilst it is being chewed. Curving around the sides of the head are a pair of stout poison claws with which the centipede catches and kills it's prey. The poison produced by these claws is very strong and some of the large tropical centipedes can give a man a very painful and sometimes dangerous bite. Our British species however, are quite harmless, because they are all small and rarely able to pierce the skin.

The poison claws are attached to a collar-like segment just behind the head. This segment is followed by the leg-bearing trunk segments, of which there are between 15 to 101 in the British centipedes. The exact number varies from species to species and often within a species as well, but it is always an odd number. The upper and lower surfaces of each trunk segment are covered by protective shields, the upper ones of which are called tergites. Many of our centipedes exhibit a striking alternation between long and short tergites along the body, an arrangement which maintains the rigidity of the body when running at speed. Many of the trunk segments have a tiny pore or stigma on each side. These pores are the openings of the breathing system. They lead to minute tubes called tracheae, which spread throughout the body carrying air to all parts.

As a result of the number of trunk segments, centipedes do not have a 100 legs as the name suggests: there are between 30 and 202 in a fully equipped adult specimen (unless he's been run over by a lawnmower). The centipede has a problem controlling so many legs when moving about, but the problem is eased in many species because each leg is slightly longer than the one in front. With this arrangement, the centipede is less likely to trip over it's own feet. The last pair of legs is always slightly different from the rest and usually trails behind the body. These legs are well supplied with sensory bristles and they act as an extra pair of antennae. This is a very useful feature for animals whose hind quarters are some way from the head and which often need to back out of crevices.

The centipede is basically a predatory beast, although one of our garden species occasionally nibbles roots. They use their speed to run down and catch a variety of other creatures, including woodlice, harvestmen, spiders, mites, springtails, beetles, and many other insects. They also eat worms and slugs. This diet shows very clearly the problem of trying to organise any bio-system into 'friend' and 'foe'. By eating slugs and leatherjackets the centipedes are certainly doing the gardener a favour, but how much of this favour is undone when the centipede starts eating the garden spiders...difficult to answer...for the same reason, it is not practicable to go dousing every insect you see with insecticide...you never it was probably doing YOU a favour...until YOU clobbered it.

Their speed and their poison claws give the centipede an effective defence against most of their enemies, and little is known about the animals which may eat centipedes. Birds, including domestic chickens, eat centipedes when they can catch them, and so do shrews and toads. Ground beetles, spiders and harvestmen probably take appreciable numbers of centipedes when they are at their young stage in life, but the most important predator of a centipede is another centipede. Injured specimens are readily eaten in captivity, and their cannibalistic tendencies ensure that one rarely finds more than a single centipede under one stone.

Again little is known about their reproduction. The females lay their eggs throughout the spring and summer, but the eggs are rarely found. Those of many species are sticky and they are rolled in the soil as soon as they are laid, thus making them almost impossible to find. Other species actually look after their eggs and young for a while. The way in which centipedes grow up differs from species to species and will be covered as each separate species is explained. Several moults or skin changes are necessary however, and these give the centipede the chance to replace legs which have been lost. Centipedes are often seen with one or more legs shorter than the others. The short legs are being regenerated and they get larger with every moult. If a centipede loses a leg when it is very young it can regenerate another. If the leg is lost in later life, there may not be enough moults left in it's life to totally regenerate the leg, therefore it will always have a shorter leg....hence the joke....What goes 99 clunk?..A centipede with a wooden leg...ha...ha...ok, please yourself..!

The centipedes are basically a tropical group and, as far as I know, only 44 have been recorded in he British Isles. Even then, not all these are natives of our islands. Several species have been brought in with plants and have succeeded in establishing themselves (as is the case with a lot of animals in this country). These introduced species are usually listed as synanthropic ('with man'), in that they are rarely found away from human activity, but they are generally restricted to localised areas near the original point of entry, unless of course, they become fully acclimatised, then they will be able to spread further afield. Only about a dozen species are what can be called common and widely distributed. They can be found at all times of the year, but they are most numerous in spring and autumn, you've only got to dig the garden over to find them. During the winter and the drier parts of the year the animals burrow down into the soil where they are less affected by the cold and drought.

#108 Shark

Sharks are a group of carnivorous ocean going fish with 368 different species in a total of 30 families. Some species of shark, such as the great white, are infamous among humans because they have been involved in attacks resulting in severe injury and sometimes death. In general, however, sharks are shy fish, who will not attack unless provoked.

Sharks have been around since prehistoric times, with fossils indicating that sharks have maintained their basic shape and evolutionary adaptations for millions of years. The fish is simple, efficient, and relatively intelligent, with evidence suggesting that sharks can acquire skills on par with many land animals. Some sharks are endangered due to heavy human trade in their fins, including many of the large species of shark.

Sharks range in size from the pygmy shark, which is seven inches (18 centimeters) long, to thewhale shark, which can reach 50 feet (15 meters) in length. Most sharks have gray upper bodies and pale lower bodies for camouflage purposes. Sharks have several other characteristics which distinguish them from most fish, beginning with their skeleton, which is formed fromcartilage rather than bone. This makes sharks stronger and more flexible that many fish species.

#107 Whale

A whale is a marine mammal in the order Cetacea, which also includes dolphins and porpoises. Technically, the term could be used to refer to any animal in this biological order, but by convention, it is reserved for particularly large representatives of the order. Whales can be found in all the oceans of the world, migrating to different regions for breeding and feeding, and the animals hold a popular mystique with humans, due to their impressive size and striking behaviors.

There are two basic types of whale. Toothed whales have massive jaws and teeth for eating a varied diet of marine animals. Baleen whales are filter feeders, eating plankton and other small organisms. Baleen resembles a comb, and is made from keratin, the same tough fiber which makes up human hair and nails. Both whale types have horizontal split flukes, or tails, and front flippers. In addition, a whale has a blowhole to breathe through at the top of its head.

Unlike most animals, a whale decides when it should breathe. Some whales are capable of remaining submerged for up to an hour before needing to resurface for fresh air. Whales expel water from the surface of their blowholes when they are preparing to breathe, leading to distinctive whale “spouts” which are used to spot whales. Each whale species has a distinctive spout, allowing people to determine what type of whale they are looking at.
